Obituary for Rita Roppel Steedly Rita Roppel Steedly, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Caroline and Edward Roppel.
Rita grew up with her 7 siblings in the heart of St. Matthews on Grandview Avenue. She worked several years as a bookkeeper at Stockyards Bank before marrying the late Bill Steedly in 1951 (the first couple to be wed at Our Lady of Lourdes church). Rita and Bill moved to their farm in Bullitt County where she enjoyed life as a wife, mother and homemaker, raising their four children, Becky Kiefer, Mary Anne Krebs (Tommy), Mark Steedly (Peggy), and David Steedly (Teresa).
After Bill’s death in 1993, she returned to St. Matthews and finally to Brownsboro Park Retirement Community. Rita had many hobbies and interests over the years including playing her organ, oil painting, cooking, sewing, and making quilts for each of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most recently, she enjoyed coloring pictures, playing cards, and reading the latest Facebook news on her Ipad.
Her children will always remember her countless hours of food preparation for each delightful holiday meal, and how she loved baking dozens of gallon jars full of Christmas cookies to share with family and friends each year. She has 11 grandchildren: Denise (Steve) Barnum, Julie (Derrick) Baker, Wesley (Kristin) Krebs, Christopher Kiefer, Nick Kiefer, Josh Kiefer, Andy Steedly, Eric Steedly, Christine Steedly, Laurel (Ben) Alexander, and Logan (Hannah) Steedly. She is also survived by 2 brothers, John and Virgil Roppel, and 13 great grandchildren: Berkley, Ember, Arlee and Otto Barnum, Micah, Gabrielle (Brie), Nathanael “Nate”, Elias and Leo Baker, Jacob and Levi Krebs, Madilyn and Macie Alexander.
Visitation will be at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, “in St. Matthews” on Friday, Sept. 28 from 6 to 8 pm and again Saturday at 9 am at Our Lady of Lourdes church in St. Matthews, followed by a celebration of life at 10 am and burial at Brookland Cemetery in Brooks, KY. In honor of Rita’s love for color, the family requests that you to wear your favorite colors to her visitation or celebration of life.
