Bob was born February 26, 1943, to Everett and Mabel (Williams) Thompson in Madison, SD. He grew up on farms in the Madison area surrounded by family and friends. He grew up playing baseball and football – often with the community gathering at their farm.

Bob held a love of sports throughout his life, whether it was playing, watching, or coaching. He graduated from Chester High School in Chester, SD, and continued his education at General Beadle College (now Dakota State University) with a Bachelor of Science in History. He then became a teacher of Social Sciences and taught Junior High and High School in Hanley Falls, MN, Veblen, SD, and Rosholt, SD.

On July 6, 1982, Bob was joined in marriage to Janice Kallstrom in Sisseton, SD. Together they wove their life in the fabric of the Rosholt community. He often talked about teaching multiple generations of people from the same family.

Bob taught Social Sciences in the public school, where Jan was the nutritionist. He was loved by all – students, faculty, athletes, parents, everyone. He had a way with children.

He continued his love of sports as the head football coach, assistant basketball coach and head track coach at Rosholt and later coached football for 15 years in Wheaton, MN. Bob retired in 2004. Recently, he received his 40-year coaching ring.

After he retired from teaching in Rosholt, Bob worked at the Interstate 29 Information Center, which was the perfect fit for the “Thompson Gift of Gab” as he was able to enjoy talking with people from all walks of life and helping them find their way. He was also a member of the daily coffee klatch at the Crossroads in Rosholt. He loved to play cards and spend time with people.

When Bob and Jan moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to Troy and Dominic, he was a member of the Active Generation which allowed him to continue his daily interaction with people. He also continued working for the Information Center closer to Sioux Falls. He loved his wife and his family and thought about others, always.

He had a special place in his heart for his grandson Dominic. Bob was a giver – his time, his teaching, his coaching, and his heart. Bob could talk to anyone about anything and he really listened.

Those that knew Bob will never forget him. Bob is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jan of Sioux Falls; son, Troy Kosbab of Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Dominic, Josette and Nickole; and four great-grandchildren. Bob is also survived by his brother, Bill (Sharon) Thompson of Sioux Falls; sister, Nancy (Bill) Torkelson of Sioux Falls; brother-in-law, Ted Stoffel of Ivanhoe, MN; sister-in-law, Bertie Thompson of Madison, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Mabel Thompson; brother, Jim Thompson; and sister, Mary Thompson Stoffel.
