Obituary for Robert Dean Gilmore Bob Gilmore passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on February 4, 2018, in his home in Newberg, OR, a few days before his 86th birthday. Bob was born in Phoenix, AZ, but grew up mostly in Southern California. In 1954 he graduated from Azusa Pacific College and went on to get two Masters degrees, one from American Baptist Seminary of the West and one from USC.
In 1958 he married his sweetheart, Maurine Owen, and they had 4 children, Cynthia, Sharon, David and Dwight. In 1960 they went to Spanish language school in Costa Rica, and then on to Guatemala where they were Friends missionaries. In 1964, Bob accepted a position at George Fox College as Spanish professor, and, aside from a year at USC in 1967 and a year in Guatemala in 1978, spent the remainder of his life in Newberg.
In addition to teaching Spanish, he taught audio-visual technology and started the IT department at George Fox. He taught there for 36 years, and was a Professor Emeritus. His love for God, people, and Spanish led him to start the Newberg Hispanic Friends Church, together with his family, and he served there 12 years as volunteer pastor.
Bob’s other passions included music (playing the piano, singing, and listening), flowers, food, keeping in touch with his many friends, and, for the past 7 years, writing poems and sharing them with everyone. His dream came true when he was able to hold a copy of his published book of poetry, which was finished in late 2017. Awaiting his arrival in Heaven were his parents Charles and Hallie (Cosand) Gilmore, his brother Joe Gilmore, and many other friends and relatives.
He will be lovingly missed and remembered by his wife of nearly 60 years, Maurine, his 4 children and their families, many other relatives, and hundreds of friends. There will be a viewing time at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Home, 207 Villa Rd. , from 9:30-12 on February 23, with a private graveside service for family at Noble Cemetery following.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Newberg Friends Church on February 24, at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, order his book “Through the Years in Sunshine and Shadows” from Amazon and enjoy and share it with others, or make a donation in his name to the charity of your choice.
