Robert Hadley Shurtliff December 18, 1930 ~ July 8, 2018 On July 8, 2018, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away after a long illness. It will be a joyful greeting as he meets his father on the other side. Bob was born in Ogden, Utah on December 18, 1930 to Lee Shurtliff and Florence Hadley and attended school in Ogden graduating from Ogden High School.
After attending Weber State for two years, he transferred to Utah State where he received his Bachelor’s degree. He participated in the ROTC programs from high school through college and as a result, received a commission when he left USU. He then served as a 1st Lt.
in the Army during the Korean War. After being discharged he returned to USU, where he met his future wife LaWanna “Lou” Miles. They were married August 24, 1957 and moved to Ogden.
Bob worked for Job Service for 17 years, but took a break during this time to become the owner of the Ogden Bowling Center. He was an outstanding bowler and received numerous awards through the years. He was a member of the Ogden Bowling Hall of Fame and also the Utah Bowling Hall of Fame.
He won enough money winning the well-known Ritz Classic to make a down payment on their first home. He was an “Aggie” through and through and was awarded the title of “Golden Aggie” in 2003. He loved sports from participating to watching them on TV.
From the time he was small, his dad taught him to fish, hunt ducks, and pheasants. He became an excellent marksman and a great fisherman. He carried on this tradition with his family.
He was a better than average golfer. Lou lost her parents when they were young, and shortly after Bob and Lou were married two of her siblings came to live with them. Bob accepted the challenge and through the years was very supportive.
Parley became the big brother in the family. Bob loved his family dearly. His support of his wife through the years was remarkable – always being there when she needed him.
