Robert “Bob” Wilson Makemson Jr., 84, died on Sept. 3, 2018 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Bob worked for nearly 60 years in Florida as a civil and architectural engineer.

He designed several landmark buildings in Jacksonville, Brooksville and West Palm Beach, including the Royal Palm Theatre and Cedar Hills Shopping Center. His company, Makemson and Associates, also designed several innovative businesses and private residences. Bob was affectionately known as “Lord Makemson” or “Lord M” by his family and friends.

He often wrote poetry and plays and he could be seen at the now-closed Einstein a Go-Go in Jacksonville Beach giving readings and performing his version of slam poetry. He was a playwright, actor, inventor, novelist and historian. He loved discussing literature and history and he had a remarkable memory for facts and details.

He appreciated the company of friends and social gatherings. Bob lived in Jacksonville his entire life and was one of its most loyal supporters. He graduated from Landon High School and grew up in the San Jose area.

His parents were among the founding members of the San Jose Country Club and he was an excellent golfer and marksman there. His parents also were instrumental in the origins of modern-day Jacksonville and Bob was privileged to associate with many of Florida’s political and business leaders. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Wilson Makemson of Birmingham, AL, and Elizabeth Clarice Pless of Knoxville, TN.

He is survived by two daughters, Vanessa Makemson Unglaub (George) of Tallahassee, FL, and Clarice Makemson Moran (Tom) of Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren, Tyler Winchester, Katrina Pepper (Ryan), Katie Moran, Thomas Moran and Daniel Moran; two great grandchildren. Special friends include Brad Zang, JoAnne and Dan Young and Larraine Gaches, all of Jacksonville; and Barbara Jackson of West Palm Beach. A celebration of life will be held in December.
