Robert Lucas McDonald, 86, died peacefully, surrounded by his beloved wife, Mary Lou, and family at the Care Partners Solace Center in Asheville, NC on October 26, 2018. Bob was born September 29, 1932 in Waterbury, CT. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1954 with a degree in Business Administration and went on to earn a Master of Science from Columbia University in 1958.

Bob was very proud of his service in the military. While in college, he was in Navy ROTC. When he graduated he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps.

He served three years active duty including one year overseas. He retired as a Captain in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1962. Bob worked as manager in the corrugated box industry for Weyerhaeuser and Union Camp.

He retired after 28 years in 1986. He began a second career teaching business classes at community colleges in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, MI near where they lived. He told many stories about teaching business skills to women at the prison in Coldwater, MI.

He and his wife moved to Sun City West near Phoenix, AZ to enjoy a full retirement in the desert in 1998. They moved to Asheville in 2015. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Mary Lou McDonald.

Of his four siblings, his older brother Martin “Mac” McDonald died in 2014. His younger sister, Alicia McNiff lives in Glenmont, NY and his younger brother, Bill, lives in Pleasanton, CA. Bob is also survived by his four children and their families: Kevin and his wife Linda McDonald of Arden, NC and their children, Colin of Charlotte, NC and Megan, of Cincinnati, OH; Brian and his wife Michelle McDonald and their daughter Claire of Cincinnati, OH; Molly and her husband Tom Santo of Sheffield, PA and their children, Stefanie of Pittsburgh, PA, Andrew and wife Marissa of Philadelphia, PA and Kari of Sheffield, PA; and Nora and husband Mike MacBryde of Danville, CA and their three daughters Katie, Emily and Sarah.

A private Memorial Mass will be held at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Arden on Wednesday, Nov. 21 followed by burial at the Western Carolina Veteran’s Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Care Partners Foundation on behalf of the Solace Center, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
