Roger McMahon June 19, 1920 – December 21, 2018 Roger McMahon, 98, of Wallingford, loving husband of Marie (Couch) McMahon, died peacefully at home, Friday, December 21, 2018. He was born June 19, 1920 in Southington, CT. Roger graduated from Lyman Hall High School where he was a member of the State Championship Basketball team.

He was of the the first members voted into the Lyman Hall High School Hall of Fame for his days as a player, coach and Athletic Director. Roger was a true patriot and member of the greatest generation. Roger graduated from The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and when WWII started, he served aboard ships in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian Oceans.

He then became a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and served on ships in the South Pacific and South Sea Islands during the war. After the war, Roger earned his degree at Arnold College in Physical Education and a Master’s degree in Education from UCONN. He then returned to his alma mater, Lyman Hall as a teacher, boys basketball coach and Athletic Director for 31 years.

As a boys basketball coach he was voted the 1965 boys basketball coach of the year by the New Haven Tap-off Club. After retirement he enjoyed playing golf every day at Lyman Meadows Golf Club until his early 90’s. When he could no longer golf, he went for his daily coffee hour at Half Moon Cafe, where he enjoyed the friendship of staff and friends John, Bob B., Rich, Frank, and Mark.

He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 73 and Retired Officers Association. Roger was also one of the original founding members of the Wallingford Born: June 19, 1920 Place of Birth: Southington, CT Death: December 21, 2018 Place of Death: Wallingford, CT Occupation: Roger returned to his alma mater, Lyman Hall as a teacher, boys basketball coach and Athletic Director for 31 years. He enjoyed watching all UCONN sports teams and all the teams from Boston. In addition to his wife Marie of nearly 70 years, he is survived by his son Robert T. (Deborah) McMahon, and daughter Alison (David) Lurie of Stoughton, MA. ; grandchildren Sean (Audrey), Patrick, Adam, Jillian, and Meagan.

He is also survived by his niece Peggy (Gene) Rametta; and nephew Paul (Paula) Stevens. He was predeceased by his son Craig R. McMahon; and his sister Lucille Stevens. His family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext.

, Wednesday, December 26, 2018 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 27, at 12 p.m. from The Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Church of the Resurrection, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Interment with military honors will be in the In Memoriam Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Roger may be sent to the Roger McMahon Athletic Scholarship Fund, c/o The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext. , Wallingford, CT.
