Roy William Southern, 82, a resident of the Fort Armstrong, Rock Island, died Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Ave. , Moline.

Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline, where military honors will be conducted by the Moline American Legion Post 246. Roy was born on August 5, 1935 in Moulton, IA, the son of Loyd and Lelia Walker Southern.

He married Loretta Olson (Buckley) on December 15, 1973, in Rock Island. She preceded him in death on August 24, 2007. Roy was a veteran, having proudly served in the U.S. Army.

He had previously been employed at IH Farmall and Navistar International. He loved to watch baseball and NASCAR and he had an interest in tractors. Survivors include his children, Sheryl Southern, Bettendorf; Randy Southern, Bettendorf, Terri (Dan) Randolph, Dunlap, IL, Craig Southern, Florida, Tracy (Sam) Downey, Papillion, NE; step-son, Scott (Sandy) Brown, Columbus Junction, IA; step-daughter, Julie (Mike) McGeehon, Peoria; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; siblings, Richard (Darlene) Southern, Centerville, IA, Beatrice French, Moravia, IA, and Jim (Betty) Southern, Newton, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-daughter, Michelle; grandson, Steven; granddaughter, Felicia; 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Memories may be shared on the tribute wall.
