“I’ll Fly Away” ~Committal~ Benediction ~Interment~ Morning Glory Cemetery Georgetown County, South Carolina Reflections of Life Ruth Cathleen Simmons was born on March 22, 1931 in Georgetown, South Carolina to the union of the late Edward “Hamp” Smith and the late Anna “Baby” Simmons Smith. She was the eldest of eleven children. Her parents, and siblings, William James Smith, Francine Otello Addison, Betty Lou Sumpter, Harold L. Smith, Rodney R. Smith, Vermell “Bunny” Rodrigues, Edna G. McPherson, all predeceased her.

Ruth became member of Dickerson A.M.E. Church at a very early age. She received the second hand of fellowship at her home church, Meadowlawn Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. She accepted the Lord and Savior at an early age, served God faithfully and, until her death, was diligent in the work of the church.

She was educated in the public schools of Georgetown County and graduated from Howard High School. In 1951, Ruth became the bride to Alexander “Buff” Simmons. This marriage was blessed with three girls and four boys.

Ruth was a devoted mother and spouse who traveled overseas for years as a military wife with her husband and children. This normally quiet person enjoyed a good joke and had a hearty laugh. She loved talking politics, loved watching morning talk shows and sports in which women excelled.

Especially, she loved her summer visits with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her faith was strong and true and provided a calming presence for all who knew her. Bible stories were among her favorite pastimes and they were extra special when shared with her late best friend, Evelyn.

Those who rejoice in her home-going include her husband of sixty-seven years, Alexander Simmons of Louisville; seven children, Barbara Jean Dues of Louisville, Alexander “Ricky” Simmons, Jr. (Rettie), Prentiss, MS, Jennifer “Debbie” Simmons, Pflugerville, TX, Ronald “Ronnie” Simmons (Patricia), Killeen, TX, Frankie Simmons, (Amy), Louisville, KY, Lelo Simmons, Pflugerville, and Lindy Simmons, Atlanta, GA; fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren; two loving sisters, Jeanette Anderson (Milton), Georgetown, SC and Hershular Goff (Robert), Mechanicsville, VA; two brothers-in-law, Peter McPherson, Pawleys Island, SC and Andrew Rodrigues, Georgetown, SC; a number of nieces and nephews, other loving relatives.
