Mrs. Ruth Adriel Read Patterson died in her sleep at the Friends Home West in Greensboro, NC, on Friday, February 1, 2019. Born in Philadelphia, PA, on 20 March 1920, she was preceded in death by her parents, Wade Harold Read (1893-1988) and Beatrice Lapp Read (1897-1975); her only sibling, Edward Wade Read (1923-2013); and her husband, F.M. Simmons Patterson, MD (1914-98). A nurse anesthetist, she met her husband during his surgical residency at Abington Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

After their marriage in Philadelphia in 1944, the couple moved permanently to North Carolina, where they practiced medicine and reared their four children: F. M. Simmons Patterson, Jr., MD (Charlotte) of Pinehurst, NC; David Read Patterson, MD (Martha) of Greensboro, NC; John Stephen Patterson (Jessica Stanley) of Greenville, NC; and Isabelle Simmons Patterson Burbank (James) of Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Patterson is survived by eleven grandchildren. A graveside service in her honor will be held at a date to be announced at historic Cedar Grove Cemetery in New Bern, NC, where she shall be interred beside her parents and husband.
