Ruth Thornton Covington, 87, of Rockwell, passed away Friday, January 4, 2019 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury surrounded by family. She was born on August 23, 1931 in Alamance County NC to the late Odie Thornton and Gertrude Thornton. Ruth worked in the Sterile Processing department at Tri-State Hospital Supply until her retirement.

She was a past member of Second Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. Ruth enjoyed going to the beach, tending to her Rose bushes, and being with her family and friends. She had a special group friends at Johnny’s where she ate regularly who knew her as “Grammy”.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Claude A. Covington in 1990; her brother, Earl Thrornton; and her sister, Dororthy Tucker. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Leigh Covington of Rockwell; her grandson, Greg (Taylor) Fleming of Salisbury; her granddaughter, Caitlin (LaShanda) McLaurin of Landis; her great-grandchildren, Caden Fleming and Chloe Fleming; and her special dog and companion a Tuxedo Toy Poodle, Samson. The family will receive friends on Wednesday January 9, 2019 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at Powles Staton Funeral Home (913 W. Main St., Rockwell, NC 28138).

The funeral service time is pending for Thursday. The time will be finalized by end of the day on Monday. Powles Staton Funeral Home is assisting the Covington family.
