Msgt. Samuel Douglas Mangum 82, retired USAF, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior in Heaven on Friday March 8, 2019 at his home while surrounded by his Family. Doug was born in Granville County on March 23, 1936 to the late Jessie Hubert and Mary Andrews Mangum.
He proudly served his Country in the United States Army and the United States Air Force and retired in 1975 with 21 years of honorable service as a Master Sergeant, Doug’s valor and skills were recognized with numerous decorations. Following his Military career, Doug was employed with Jeffrey’s Seed Company in 1981 – 2000 with 19 years of dedicated Service. Doug was a member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.
Doug enjoyed watching sports, especially his beloved UNC Tarheel Basketball Team, as well as baseball, football and racing. Doug was willing to help anyone in need and was always on call to give a helping hand. He will be remembered by his Family as a faithful and loving Husband, Dad, Papa and Popee.
He will be missed by his Family and his life-long friend; Tootsie Vinson and the entire Vinson Family, as well as many others including Teresa Hackett and significant other Charlie and his boys. A Service to celebrate Doug’s life will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday March 12, 2019 at Woods Grove Church with Pastor Barry Teague officiating. The Family will greet friends immediately following the service in the Church fellowship hall and other times at his home.
Interment will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday March 13, 2019 in the Vinson Family Cemetery with full Military honors. Doug is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen Rose Daniels Mangum, Children; Bunnie and husband Bill Gent of SC, Bruce Mangum and wife Karen of NC, Jimmie Mangum and significant other Theresa Andrews of Virginia, Pam Mangum and significant other Tim Smith of NC and Debbie Mangum and significant other Don Stanley of NC. Grandchildren; Mark Gent and wife Jennifer, Dennis Gent and wife Charlace, Billy Gent and significant other Rachael, Tracey and husband Brian Smith, Jessica and husband Jourdon Pope, Melanie and husband Brandon Edgerton, Zach Mangum and fiancé’ Lacy, Ashley and husband David Bratcher, Kristin and husband Josh Brown.
Great Grand Children: Connor, Ethan, Emma, Riley, Emma, Adrianna, Adrien, Jacob, Nicolas, Kaitlyn, Jaymeson, Layla Rose, Eli, Cohen, Henry and one on the way. Several Nieces and Nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings; James, Lester, Kenneth, Matthew, John, Alice Mae (Ragland) and Harold.
