Sandra’s Obituary Sandra Clark Scholz (Sande), a resident of Salida from 1999 to 2017, passed away in Fort Collins, CO on February 21, 2019, following a devastating stroke in July 2018, from which she never recovered. She was born on October 16, 1940 in Lincoln, NE to J. Leo Clark and Grayce I. (Leu) Clark, and was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, David, her sons Brian and Daniel, and three grandsons.
Brian, his wife Dana, and their son Andrew reside in Fort Collins; and Dan, his wife Jamie, and their sons, Tyler and Nathan, reside in Clayton, MO, a suburb of St. Louis. Sande graduated from high school in North Platte, NE. She then earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social work at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, and a master’s degree in social work from Columbia University.
She married David Scholz in 1965. In 1968, they moved from New York City to Chicago, and in 1972 to Oak Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago. In Illinois she worked for the Institute for Juvenile Research, Illinois Children’s Home & Aid Society, and the River Forest Public Schools.
From 1977 to 1994 she was the social worker in the River Forest school system. She retired in 1994 and in 1999 she and David moved to Salida, CO. Earlier, in 1989, Sande had purchased a summer cabin in St. Elmo, CO, which is not far from Salida.
From that time on she spent much of nearly every summer (and after she retired, part of autumn) there. The cabin was probably her favorite place in the world during those years. She found it to be a rejuvenating place, and there she developed many friends and hiking buddies.
Sande loved hiking in the mountains and was active with a few different hiking groups in the Salida area. After she got her dog, Sky, in 2006, he was a best friend and went on nearly every hike with her. They hiked hundred of miles during their years together.
Sky misses her and those hikes. Another of Sande’s loves was traveling. In addition, to visiting many parts of the United States, she traveled numerous times in Europe, north Africa, Asia, and Central and South America.
While living in Salida, Sande and her husband were active in the Monarch Mavericks Square Dance Club, and she volunteered for a variety of miscellaneous other activities. In St. Elmo she also did volunteer work, including service as president of the St. Elmo Property Owners Association. Sande greatly enriched the lives of people she worked with professionally, as well as the lives of her personal friends.
She was well liked, well respected, and will long be remembered. A memorial service is planned for June 1st in Fort Collins, and there are tentative plans for another memorial gathering in Salida in July. Updated information will be posted at www.
