Sandra Offergeld, 82, of Moline, died Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, Christ the King Social Concerns, or the Moline Public Library. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., is assisting the family.
Sandy was born on July 25, 1936, in Spring Valley, IL, the daughter of George and Rose (Scarpellini) Thomas, of Spring Valley. She graduated from Hall Township High School in 1954. She then attended the University of Illinois, Urbana – Champaign, where she graduated in 1958 with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications.
While there, she was inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha, the National Honor Society in Journalism. She married Martin Offergeld of LaSalle, IL, on July 26, 1958. She and her husband moved quite often and settled in Moline in 1972.
Sandy worked as a substitute teacher in the Moline, East Moline School districts for many years. She enjoyed working with children and furthered her education by attending classes at Western Illinois University, taking courses in elementary education. She later joined the staff at Moline Public Library and worked there for 17 years.
While there, she enjoyed working in the Circulation Department, Reference Desk, and later volunteered for Friends of the Library in their used bookstore. Sandy was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and enjoyed working with the Social Concern Committee and participated in the Prayer Chain. She was also a member of the P.E.O. Chapter K.T.
She enjoyed golf, even having a hole-in-one, tennis, and particularly her many book clubs. Sandra loved traveling with her family to different places including Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Paris, Mexico and spending her winters in Florida. She loved playing cards, especially bridge with her friends and pinochle with her family.
Sandy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and loved being with her grandchildren and family. Survivors include her husband, Martin; children, Lori Offergeld, Chicago, Martin Offergeld, Atlanta, GA, Leslie Offergeld, Edwardsville, IL, and Michael Offergeld, Chicago; grandchildren, David Elovitz and Anna Elovitz, Edwardsville, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, George Thomas.
The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to nurses and other personnel at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for the wonderful care and loving affection shown to Sandy and her family during this difficult time. Memories may be shared on the tribute wall.
