Shirlee Vera Olsen Dastrup , December 17, 1920 — February 19, 2019

Our treasured mother, grandmother, and beloved family matriarch, Shirlee Vera (Olsen) Dastrup, 98, passed away peacefully February 19, 2019 in Alpine, Utah, of natural causes. Shirlee was born December 17, 1920 in Rigby, Idaho, to Harvey Martin and Ann Ellen Groom Olsen. She married her sweetheart, Rue Barron Dastrup, December 3, 1941 in Preston, Idaho, and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on January 25, 1942.

Rue preceded her in death after 50 years of marriage. Shirlee was a devoted wife and mother and spent her life loving and serving her family. After her children were grown, Shirlee enjoyed a remarkable career as Volunteer Director of Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

Here she used her gifts of compassion and caring to minister to sick children and their families for many years. She taught her family by word and example to look for ways to serve others and to live a meaningful, useful life. Shirlee was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She served faithfully in the church and was an exceptional visiting teacher. Shirlee, whom her posterity lovingly called “Nonie,” dedicated her life to caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always attending their dance recitals, sports events, rodeo competitions, birthday parties, plays, choir concerts, and every other important life event.

This kept her very busy, considering the size of her posterity! She is survived by her daughter, Lindsay (Rick) Powell, and a daughter-in law, Linda Dastrup, as well as 13 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Rue, two children: Sherrie Dastrup and Lincoln Dastrup, one grandson, and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.in the Mt. Mahogany Stake Center, 1548 North 900 West, Pleasant Grove, Utah where family and friends may attend a viewing from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm prior to funeral services. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery under the direction of Olpin Family Mortuary, Pleasant Grove.
