Obituary for Shirley R. Nilles Print Shirley R. Nilles, 89, of Dubuque, Iowa died January 25, 2019. Visitation will be from noon to 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 with the funeral mass immediately following at St. Columbkille Catholic Church. Shirley was born on April 4, 1929, the daughter of Rachel (Germain) and Emil Lyons.
She attended St. Columbkille grade school and high school and graduated from Senior High School in Dubuque. She married Dale Nilles on October 21, 1950; he preceded her in death. Shirley enjoyed cooking for her family, especially her peanut butter cookies.
Along with cooking, she enjoyed knitting, reading and especially enjoyed murder mystery books. In her free time, Shirley enjoyed doing volunteer work around Dubuque. She is survived by her three sons: Kim Nilles of Cedar Rapids, IA; Kurt Nilles of Dubuque, IA and Doug Nilles of Cedar Rapids, IA; her grandchildren Angela Nilles, LaResa Nilles, Cody Nilles, Josh Nilles and Jordan Adams.
She is also survived by several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Charles Lyons; her son Kevin; her daughters-in-law Michelle Nilles and Kathy Nilles and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. The family requests no flowers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice in Shirley’s name. The family would like to thank Eagle Pointe Place, Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Salas and Shirley’s many other caregivers for their compassionate care for Shirley and for our family.
