Shirley’s Obituary The glories of Heaven were revealed to Shirley Hamm Smith March 22, 2019. Born March 10, 1936 in Blountsville, Alabama, she was the daughter of Farley and Pearl Nichols Hamm. She moved to Chic, Tennessee and on March 29, 1958 married Paul Smith.

Together, they embarked on a cross-country tour following the fruit harvests, eventually settling in Lakeland, Florida where they raised their 5 children. She was the engine that kept her busy family going. She was a wonderful cook and self-taught baker.

Aside from working in the fruit business, Shirley was called to be a homemaker and wife and wore that title well. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Olivie Grizzle Hamm, her eleven-year-old son, Richard Leon Hamm, grandson Grant Coleman Brimm, and her siblings, Cecil Hamm, Inez Dunn, Theo Hamm, Emmanuel “Manuel” Hamm, Glen Hamm, Vondell Hamm, Rethel Hamm, Fay Nell Banks, Margaret Hamm, and an infant brother. Shirley leaves behind her husband of 61 years, Paul Smith, and daughters Debbie Pruiett of West Plains, Missouri, Paula Roper (Tommy), Bobbie Burns (Gerald), and Janet Brimm (Avery) all of Dyersburg, 11 grandchildren: Tony Prater (Amber), Beverly Jones, Jamie Fowler, Jon Garrison, Zach Roper, Ginny Roper, Amanda Spires (Steven), Bobbie Richardson (Cary), and Jason Burns (Bridget), as well as 12 great-grandchildren, her brother Dean Hamm of Cullman, Alabama, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation services for Mrs. Shirley will be Sunday, March 24 from 5-8pm with funeral Monday, March 25 at 10am at Dyersburg Funeral Home. Bro. Calvin Smith and Bro.

Tommy Roper officiating. Pallbearers will be Tony Prater, Jamie Fowler, Jon Garrison, Zach Roper, Steven Spires, Jarred Jones. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.

Her family would like to send a special thanks to Oakwood Community Living Center for providing such love and care to Mrs. Shirley and the family these past five months. Their staff went above and beyond, and on behalf of the entire Smith family, thank you is not enough.
