He also has many surviving nieces and nephews and cousins. Spencer was born and raised in a few towns in Central New York. This is where he shone with his athletics in high school especially loving Baseball.
He then met and married Jackie Chilson at 17 years old. Graduating married. Then went on to having 4 children.
In his life he lived in many places, Central NY, Des Moines, IA, Worthington, OH, Clearwater, OH, Troutman, NC and then back to Columbus, Ohio. He was a man’s man who loved hunting and the great outdoors. He also loved Myrtle Beach crabbing and eating his Blue Crab with All Bay seasoning.
He had a long career in Sales as a General Manager for Massey Ferguson and ending as President of Landini Corp a div of Massey from 1960-1983. Then owned Matteson and Associates in Worthington, Ohio. As well as working for White-New Idea, United Farm Tools and Mathews Company.
His favorite job was his last job. He was the door Greeter for Sam’s Club on Sawmill Road Columbus, Oh. He loved greeting the customers, meeting new people, the employees, the management, and the sample ladies.
But none of this is what got him to work. The children coming through the line is what got him to work. He had change in his pocket and a smile for each child.
Any sad or upset child left smiling and would get a yellow happy face on their receipt. He loved it all. What he has left us is love for each other.
He cared more about his neighbor than himself. He would stuggle to help you. He had pains but would rarely complain.
He wanted you to smile and feel good. So please join us for his life celebration on Jan 13, 2019. We know this is way out, but he would want everyone to come and join his family.
The holidays are ahead of us and we will all think of him during this wait with love. I will sure miss him. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Spencer Matteson please visit our Sympathy Store.
