Stephen Albert Markley September 23, 1947 – March 15, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guestbook Entries| Send Sympathy Card Stephen Albert Markley, 71, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 15, 2019 at his home. Born September 23, 1947 in Alva, Oklahoma, he was the son of Wayne E. and Betty Jean (Daniels) Markley. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School.

He attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University where he majored in Business and minored in History. Steve joined the United States Marines on September 16, 1966. He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on Augusta 19, 1968.

During his service, he received several decorations and medals, including a Purple Heart. He was united in marriage to Caren Braaten on August 29, 1970. The couple adopted two children, Jamie and Jessica, and later divorced.

Steve worked various jobs including being a rodeo and radio announcer, a farmer, and a substitute teacher. He loved his work with Veterans Affairs, helping fellow Veterans. Steve was loyal member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3544, as well as a member of the American Legion and the CERT Organization.

He was a faithful member of the Winfield Honor Guard. Steve loved history and visiting with people. He volunteered as emcee for several events.

He especially enjoyed the Walnut Valley Festival for many years. His family includes his son Jamie Markley of Winfield; his daughter Jessica Markley of Northfield, MN; his sisters, Nancy Markley of Winfield; Rebecca Orr and husband, Steve of Las Vegas, NV; and his grandchildren, Skylar and Summer Markley of Winfield, and Wes, Owen, and Graham Lideen of Northfield, MN. In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Wayne Markley.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Inurnment with Military Committal Honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will follow immediately after burial at the VFW.

A visitation with family is scheduled for Tuesday evening, March 19, 2019 from 5 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in Steve’s name for the VFW Post #3544. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
