Stephen Dean McGowan, son of Charles Dean and Viola Odessa (Petersen) McGowan, was born January 3, 1945 in Superior, Nebraska. He departed this life on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Bryan East Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 73 years. Steve was baptized May 20, 1945 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hardy, Nebraska.

He grew up on a farm south of Hardy with his parents and younger brother Thomas, in the area known as Kate’s Bottom. Steve attended Rosemound Elementary School, Lovewell High School (until its closure), and graduated from Superior High School with the class of 1962. In 1962, Steve was united in marriage to Sharon Ritterbush.

This union was blessed with the birth of two children, Kim and Shaun. Steve and Sharon were later divorced. He married Marlene Meyer on April 12, 1980.

Steve worked for Ray Ruth clothing, where he became a proficient tailor. He then worked for Superior Water Conditioning, purchased the company, and started Superior Lawn Care. After selling his portion of these businesses, he retired briefly before taking a job with Reams, where he worked until his death.

Steve loved camping, boating, bird watching, spending time outdoors, and attending his grandchildren’s extracurricular activities. He was a skilled builder, woodworker, and gardener; he remodeled, designed, and built houses for family. He was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church before transferring to Centennial Lutheran Church, where he served as elder and trustee.

He enjoyed traveling with Marlene to visit his grandchildren, and decorating his house with Christmas lights for the community to enjoy. Steve was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include: Wife: Marlene K. McGowan of Superior, NE; brother: Thomas C. McGowan & wife Jane of Omaha, NE; daughter: Kimberly Williams & husband David of Superior, NE; son Shaun McGowan of Fremont, NE; grandchildren: Heather Williams of Los Angeles, CA; Lauren Isaacson and husband Jordan of Superior, NE; Amy Meyers and husband Tim of San Francisco, CA; Rhys Williams and fiance Kayla Travers of Kansas City, MO; Caleb McGowan and fiance Olivia Scott of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren: Avaleigh, Sawyer and Mason Isaacson all of Superior, NE and Jude Meyers of San Francisco, CA; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, 10:30 AM, September 8, 2018 at Centennial Lutheran Church in Superior, Nebraska. with the Rev. Robert Hopkins officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Superior, Nebraska.
