Suzanne Seller, 97, of Rockport, MA, wife of the late Arthur N. Seller, passed away on Wednesday morning, December 12, 2018 at her residence. Suzanne was born in Arlington, MA on September 21, 1921, the daughter of the late Gould Kenneth and Laura Lydia (Doring) Hulse. Suzanne and Arthur Seller moved to Rockport in 1968 from Westport, Connecticut where she raised two children Cary and Wendy.
Her husband, Arthur, was a Senior Art Director at Young & Rubicam in New York City and she was a prominent photographer of young children. With both children in college, they came to Rockport to develop their next lives in the fine arts. Her husband died in 1991.
To support their lives in Rockport, Suzanne became a highly successful real estate broker for 25 years and won “sales person of the year” numerous times. She loved getting to know the properties in the greater North Shore area and developed many long-term, caring relationships that have lasted for decades. Suzanne was trained as an artist and produced wonderful color-field paintings in acrylics throughout her time in Rockport.
She believed strongly in the Rockport Art Association and supported individual artists in Rockport whose work she thoroughly believed in. Several years ago in her early nineties, Suzanne single-handedly emptied out and sold her long-time Rockport home that she had outgrown. She was graciously invited into the Rockport High School Apartments, converted into senior living.
It was here that she discovered an entirely new life within a community of truly wonderful, loving and unique individuals. She always left her door open to the many friends who came in and out throughout each day, enabling her to live on her own right up to the very end. Her family is so grateful to the many many one-of-a-kind individuals (true gems) who supported and loved her right up to the very end.
Suzanne had her own column in the Gloucester Times, with many, many thought-provoking articles that served as topics of conversation on the Cape Ann streets for years, as neighbors passed. In her community, she found her own voice and became a strong – and very wise—communicator amongst her neighbors. She was an avid chess player and very sharp pool player at the Gloucester Senior Center.
She wrote and read constantly (with and published a very popular book entitled Wild Alternatives: Sparks to Ignite Your Imagination at Any Age in 2005 (can be found on Amazon). She leaves her daughter, Wendy, her son Cary, and her son-in-law whom she adored, Will, who was at her beck-and-call whenever needed. A service will be announced at a later date, arranged in part by her many friends at her housing complex and her daughter, Wendy.
If you would like to be informed of this date, contact her daughter Wendy at wseller@comcast.net. In lieu of flowers, you may contribute to the Friends of Rockport Library, c/o Rockport Public Library, 17 School St. Rockport, MA 01966, which she adored. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester.
