Thelma Dell (Plunkett) Berndt, 91 Youngstown – Thelma Dell (Plunkett) Berndt, 91, of Youngstown, passed away on Thursday evening, December 20, 2018 with her loving family by her side after long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Thelma will always be remembered and loved by her family and friends. She was born July 16, 1927 in Caress, West Virginia, the daughter of Minter J. Belva Gay (Dennison) Lough and grew up in Sutton, West Virginia.

Thelma married Ray Plunkett in 1947 after moving Ohio and they were married for 24 years. Thelma retired after working 23 years from Urban Renewal Department as a secretary. After marrying Thomas Berndt in January 1974, they owned and operated Hasti House Restaurant in downtown Youngstown for 15 years, (where Thelma did all the baking homemade desserts for which she was well known).

In 1990 after moving to Columbiana, she and Tom opened the Village Bakery & Deli, which they ran for 6 years. At the age 66, Thelma decided to start a new venture. She attended training to become a STNA, working at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland for 3 years and then working on her own as a private caregiver.

Thelma leaves four children to who she instilled her simple values, her two daughters Debbi (Rocky) Manginelli of Canfield and Marilyn Sue Holman of Dallas, Texas, two sons David (Lauri) Plunkett of Ridgefield, Washington and Mel (Evelyn) Plunkett of Hollywood, Florida, six grandchildren Gabe (Stephanie) Manginelli of Poland, Krysten (Daryl) Cote` and Joshua Plunkett both of Ridgefield, Washington, Johnny Plunkett of Gainsville Florida and Melissa (Ryan) Evans of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Lindsay (David) Williams of Carrollton, Texas, five great grandchildren Chase, Canon, Gage, Jack and Emilia Dell, a sister June (Phil) Webb of Sevierville, Tennessee and a brother Thomas Lough of Baltimore, Maryland. Besides her parents and husband Thomas Berndt passed away September 18, 2011, Thelma was preceded in death by three brothers Paul, Harold and Carl Lough. Per Thelma’s request there will be no services or callings held at this time, but a memorial service will be held in her honor at a later date with information to follow.

Thelma always believed to never forget where you came from, so her ashes will be taken back to West Virginia for burial. Arrangements were entrusted to the professional care of the Thompson-Filicky Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman. On behalf of Thelma’s family, they would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff of Shepherd of the Valley (Poland and Boardman), Pastor Russ Adams of Western Reserve United Methodist Church and to Dorothy Barto from Alzheimer’s Network for all the advice, understanding and help that was given.
