Thomas Burns, 95 of Indian River passed away on October 14, 2018 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Tom was born on May 12, 1923 in Detroit, MI the son of Thomas Burns and Yvonne (Seguin) Burns. He grew up in Detroit and attended school at Detroit Public Schools.

Tom proudly served his country in the Army. He was a Private, first class, serving from 1942-1945 during WWII. He was stationed in Sicily and Italy during his time in the service.

After his time in the military was over, Tom went into the hardware business with his father who owned a hardware store in Detroit to which Tom eventually became owner of. After selling that hardware store, Tom relocated to Miami, FL and worked at another hardware store. It was after that, Tom built a cabin in Northern Michigan and commuted between there and Miami, serving two separate hardware stores, one in Petoskey and one in Miami.

Tom was a highly talented woodworker, his last project completed being a six foot tall bookshelf. Thomas was also very passionate about nature and enjoyed bird watching as well. He was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan.

Tom is survived by his brother Albert Burns of Anaheim, CA, and friends Dennis (Karen) Craig of Indian River, MI and Maureen O’Brien of Plymouth, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Noreen McCauley. Services for Tom will be Saturday, October 20th, visitation beginning at 10am and a funeral at 11am.

Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Indian River. Anyone wishing to make a charitable contribution in memory of Tom should consider the Traverse Bay Regional Land Conservancy, 3860 N. Long Lake Road, Suite D Traverse City, Michigan 49684. The family was served by the Lintz Funeral Home.
