Thomas G. Iacone, 98, of Easton, formerly of Nazareth, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2019. Born October 14, 1920, in Easton, PA, he was one of ten children of the late Calogero and Calogera (Cravotta) Iacono. His wife of 37 years, Frieda K. (Sauerzopf), passed away in 2009.

Tom retired as a teacher after 35 years, last working at Clinton Township Middle School, New Jersey. He received the “Teacher of the Year” award in 1974. He graduated from Easton High School Class of 1938.

He received a B.S. in education from East Stroudsburg University and a M.S. from Lehigh University. Tom served in the US Army, 80th Infantry Division, during WWII in the European and Asiatic theatres. He was a volunteer for Easton Senior Center and taught reading at Northampton County Prison.

Tom visited Russian schools in 1986 and embarked on a study tour of Russian cities. He was an avid Easton and Lafayette football fan. Tom was a regular contributor to the Express-Times “Letters to the Editor”.

He was a member of the former Olivet United Presbyterian Church. Tom was chairman and originator of the first “Nazareth Day” and received the Citizenship Award from Nazareth Borough Council in 2005. He was a former member and secretary of Nazareth Civil Service Commission, was a member of Nazareth Borough Zoning and Hearing Board, Nazareth Borough Recreation Board, Selective Service Board 114 and served on Nazareth Area School Board for two terms.

He had also been a member of the Northampton County Bicentennial committee. Surviving are two brothers, Joseph, of Greensboro, NC and Angelo, of Allentown; two sisters, Lena Nyffennegger, of Nazareth and Grace Ealer, of Bethlehem Township; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Paul and Ignazio and three sisters, Mary Recchia, Lucy Deremer and Theresa Iacono.

Services will be held at 11am Friday in the Strunk Funeral Home, Inc., 2101 Northampton Street, Wilson Borough. Call Friday 10-11am in the funeral home. Burial will be in Easton Cemetery.
