Services For Truey Williams, 89, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Missionary Baptist Church, 410 Scarbrough, Lufkin, TX. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation is Friday, February 8, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. at Canaan Baptist Church, 1313 Paul Ave.

, Lufkin, TX. Truey Williams Smith was born in Wortham, TX to the parents Dellie and Ernest Williams on September 5, 1928. Truey attended public school in Wortham, TX; later the family moved to Lufkin, TX.

She matriculated on the campus of Prairie View A & M University where-she earned a Bachelor and a Masteds degree of Education. She did various jobs before following her passion to become a teacher in the Lufkin Independent School District. Truey was passionate for 50 years as an Educator; she retired from teaching at Slack Elementary School.

Truey conquered breast cancer and a broken neck. Truey’s greatest pleasure was to take care of Dewey. Most times it seems as if they took care of each other.

She loved to sit and watch TV and attend church services. We always knew in bad weather she would not be alone. Mae Ballard was her dearest and closet friends.

They made sure each other were safe. Finally, working at the voting poll and preparing food for loved ones and friends was a pleasure for Truey. Truey was a faithful member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church since 1993, she was a dedicated member and a member of the Church Trustee Board until her demise.

Truey will be remembered as a member of the Lufkin Chapter of the Democratic Party; as District Polling Judge for Precinct 20 for over 50 years — she was a strong believer in making your vote count. She met Julian Bond, Jesse Jackson and Jimmy Carter, just to name a few. She worked on the campaigns for Mark White and Ann Richard.

She also represented Lufkin as a Delegate at several Democratic Conventions. She was a charter Member of the Top Ladies of Distinction Lufkin Chapter as well as she served several other offices. Truey pledged as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority while in college and remained active until her health declined.

Preceding her in death are her parents Dellie and Ernest Williams; her brothers – Dewey Williams, Lawrence Williams, James Caroll Williams, Ernest Williams, Jr.; Her beloved nephew/son — Anthoney Dewey Williams – whom she raised as her own. Her survivors include: step-daughter -Mattie Woods (Willie) — Fresno, California; sister Odessa Sanders Terry (Willie) of Lufkin, TX; sister-in-law — Miriam Reese King of Henderson, TX and Flossie Williams; niece – LaRetta Black Vickers of Tyler, TX; nephews — James Harold Williams and Walter Ernest Williams (Jackie); great nieces — Faydra Leann Black(also her goddaughter) and Jennifer Black, Jocelyn Patrice Williams, Jaclyn Charice Williams, Destini Chanee’ Williams, Khandi Larue; great nephew — Matthew Black; great-great nephew — Antione Ash; Special Confidants and Friends — Bonnie Sears, Noram McClain, Royce Garrett, LaVerne Gilder, Sydney Benemon and Tammy Walker and a wealth of relatives and friends.
