Ullrich “Rick” Hermann February 24, 1931 – January 26, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Retired Colonel Ullrich “Rick’ Hermann, 87, died peacefully at home Saturday, January 26, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Spring Lake, New Jersey in 1931 to German immigrants, he spent his childhood working alongside his sisters on the family dairy farm before enlisting in the US Army at age 17. A courageous soldier, he served in the infantry in the Korean War and completed two tours of duty as an officer in the Vietnam War, earning the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Air Medal, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.

After 33 1/2 years of service, rising to the rank of colonel, and earning a master’s degree from Park College, he completed his decorated career as Military Attache in Kathmandu, Nepal, before retiring to Corpus Christi, Texas. Rick was a soldier to his core and a true leader, the kind of man who inspired others and earned respect and loyalty. He loved his family and used his quick wit and storytelling to motivate his children to model both his unwavering work ethic and curiosity for learning and innovation.

He was remembered by everyone he met, and these memories will lovingly live on in his grateful friends, devoted wife, ViAnn, his adoring children, Natasha (Mark Baca), Katherine (Jacob Turner), and grandchildren, Beatrice and Miriam Baca and Kroes Turner. Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held at 9:45 a.m., Friday, February 8, 2019 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd.
