Joan VanNiel (nee: Szabo), 86 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 at her home. She was born July 21, 1932 in Lorain, Ohio. Joan was raised in Lorain, graduating from St. Mary Academy with the class of 1950.

She made her home in Amherst since 1954. Joan received her Masters in Nursing Education from Kent State. She was a nurse educator at St. Joseph Hospital and Cleveland Clinic.

She taught post graduate nursing and also taught in 71 countries including at St. Luke Institute in Tokyo for ten years. As her daughters were growing up, Joan was a Girl Scout Leader for ten years. She was the organist at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lorain for twenty years and also assisted other churches.

Joan’s passion was performing as a concert pianist. Joan and her husband designed and built a summer home on Pelee Island in Canada and wintered in Florida. Survivors include her son Robert J. VanNiel, II and his wife Theresa Lynn “Terri” of Amherst; her daughters Marybeth “Betsy” Dunford of Strongsville, Jane Hunter of Charlotte, NC, Carolyn VanNiel of Los Gatos, CA, Connie ton and her husband James of Wellington and Rosemary Bouton and her husband David of Avon; ten grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; her siblings Edward Szabo and his wife Diane of San Jose, CA and Christine Fox and her husband David of Amherst.

She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-nine years Robert J. VanNiel, Sr., on January 11, 2014; and her parents Oscar and Elizabeth Szabo (nee: Keressi). Friends may call Wednesday, March 27, 2019, from 4-7 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave. , Amherst.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Fr.

Timothy O’Connor, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Amherst. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to American Cancer Society, Lorain County Chapter; 10501 Euclid Ave.
