Obituary for Velma R. McClain Velma McClain was a devoted mother and wife to two husbands; two sons; and three grandchildren. Her first husband, Doyle McClain, was an aircraft mechanic and passed away at 67. She fell in love with her neighbor across the street, who had lost his wife due to a long sickness, and they were married and stayed together until his death in 2016 at 93.
Her two sons were both retired National Guard. Her oldest son, David, is a retired Postal worker and her youngest, James, graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington, BFA, and a MA from Texas Woman’s University in Theatre. He currently runs the Bellevue Youth Theatre in Bellevue, Washington.
Her two grandchildren, James and Katie, currently are living in Seattle, Washington. Her third granddaughter, who was disabled from birth, passed away at 21. Velma considered her children and her husbands the focus and pride of her life.
Velma was a devout Christian and embraced her family. My mom never drove, my dad took her out to drive and after one experience, she said she would never drive, and never did. My mom and dad never understood my passion for theatre, but when I graduated my mom told me that she was proud of me and told me to follow my dreams.
That inspired me to create a National, State and local award program that helps me serve over a thousand young people through theatre. She followed every story, every play, and while she could not be there, celebrated every moment of my career though over 2300 miles away. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Velma R.
