Vetres Laverne Hagwood, 65, committed her spirit to the Lord’s hands due to complications from early onset Alzheimer’s. She was welcomed into the Kingdom of God on Thursday, March 14, 2019, where she was surrounded by friends and family at Sovah Health of Martinsville. She was born March 7, 1954 in Martinsville to the late George Hairston, Ernestine Hylton Redd, and stepfather, Samuel Redd.

She was a graduate from the Class of 1972 at George Washington Carver High School. She completed her Associate’s Degree in early childhood development from Patrick Henry Community College as well as an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from National College. She was a compassionate, loving and devoted mother, sister, grandmother, friend and trusted confidante to many.

Her tremendous care for others was undisputed and was evident by her selfless acts of always putting others’ needs before her own. For over twenty years, she followed her passion and nurtured children as an in-home daycare provider. Her love of children was displayed in her tireless and selfless desire to teach and care for children as if they were her own.

She later continued her passion as a teacher at local preschools and daycares. Anyone that knew Laverne, knew of her love of cooking. Her most famous dishes were pinto beans, deviled eggs, rainbow cake, cabbage, and macaroni and cheese.

She loved her soap operas, specifically, The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and The Guiding Light. Her sense of fashion was all things jewelry, shoes, matching pocketbooks, and her snazzy Sunday best dress suits. Oh and we can’t forget her snacks, meat skins, Little Debbie anything, hard candy, Pepsi, Wise potato chips, fruit snacks and she could never get enough chicken wings.

As a child, she began her membership at Christian View Missionary Baptist Church. In her adulthood, she was an active member serving as a treasury officer, a member of the choir, Sunday school teacher, as well as devoting her time in the church nursery. She later became an active member of Antioch Christian Church, where she served on the usher board and was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship until the onset of her illness when she began attending Mountain View Baptist Church with her caregiver.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Derwin (Athena) Hylton; daughter, Shawana (John Jr.) Martin; sisters, Carolyn Nowlin and Sandra Turner; brothers, Gerald Hylton, Barry Hylton, and David Redd; extended brothers and sisters, Brenda Davis, Sylvia Millner, and Lawrence Koger; grandchildren, Kayden Moore, Bryson Hylton, J.D. Martin III, Jaxon Martin and Devin Hylton; Goddaughter, LaKeisha Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, a great-niece and great-nephew. Special thanks to her loving and devoted caregivers, Marguretta Manigault, Brooke Taylor and Sylvia Millner. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 22, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Mountain View Baptist Church, with Rev.

Junior Wimbush, officiating. Visitation will be held at 12PM, immediately prior to the service. Burial will be at the Morris Family Cemetery on Soapstone Road in Ridgeway, Virginia 24148.
