Volney L. Pinder, 100, of Port Arthur, Texas, passed away Monday, February 4, 2019, at Summer Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Beaumont. He was born February 5, 1918, in Call, Texas to Charles A. Pinder and Olivia “Ollie” Vincent Pinder. Volney proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, piloting P-38’s.

Upon his military discharge in 1946, he enrolled at Lamar Technical College and eventually obtained a degree in economics. He thereafter taught economics and various other business courses at Lamar’s main Beaumont campus before obtaining employment with the Internal Revenue Service in the Criminal Investigation Division. He first began working in the agency’s Houston office but was later transferred to the Washington D.C. office, from where he eventually retired after 27 years of service.

Upon his return to Port Arthur, he taught mathematics at Lamar University’s Port Arthur campus from 1980 to the early 1990’s. Volney was a longtime resident of Port Arthur and was a member of First Baptist Church in Port Arthur, the Confederate Air Force Civilian Club, the North Port Arthur Lion’s Club, and numerous other civic and social organizations. He loved Port Arthur and was an active participant in local politics for years.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 8, 2019, at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves. A Military graveside service will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. A visitation for family and friends will be Thursday evening from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.

Volney was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Florence Pinder. He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Pinder Daul and husband Ken of Beaumont, grandsons, Michael Keith Eaves and wife Sandy and David Paul Eaves and wife Amanda, granddaughters, Megan Ultis and husband Jonathan and Kristen Daul, nine great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
