OBITUARY W. Edward Hastings June 12, 1940 – July 11, 2018 Play Tribute Movie Charlotte – W. Edward Hastings died on July 11, 2018 after a month-long illness. Born in Punxsutawney, PA on June 12, 1940, he was the son of John and Sara Hastings who predeceased him. Ed was an honorable, caring man and his favorite times were spent with his family: vacationing, attending Penn State football games, and enjoying their cabin near the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Most of all, he loved being with Kay (his high school sweetheart), watching sports together on TV, going to movies, traveling, and going out to dinner, especially trying new restaurants. On June 25th, Ed and Kay were blessed to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Ed loved life and lived it fully with countless hobbies.
He enjoyed music of all kinds from classical to country, golf, photography, traveling, skeet and trap shooting, collecting wine, and reading, especially civil war novels. And, of course, Penn State football. Anyone who knew Ed knew that he was a very proud graduate of Penn State.
Throughout his life, Ed was fortunate to make good friends in many different communities – Buffalo, Greenwich, Savannah, Orlando, and Charlotte. After moving to Charlotte 15 years ago, he joined Carmel Country Club where he served as Treasurer and a Board Member. A member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church, Ed loved his friends, especially the Lunch Bunch.
Ed spent his entire career of 36 years with Ernst & Young. Joining the firm in 1962, he rose from a junior accountant and CPA to Managing Partner of the Buffalo office. After a transfer to New York City, he was appointed Partner-in-Charge of International Operations.
During his years in that position, he traveled to 60 countries and made over 100 trips to Tokyo. His ability to interact with the Japanese led to his last assignment as Partner-in-Charge of Japanese Relations. Survivors include his wife Kay; his daughter Cynthia and her partner Sherry Brands (Charlotte); his son Jeffrey and his wife Laura (Raleigh); and two grandchildren, Benjamin (Titusville, FL) and Amanda (Asheville).
Other survivors include his sister Mary Lynn Yoder and husband Sylvester, and nephew Mark Yoder. And last, but not least, his Casey. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 19th, from 6-8 pm at Harry & Bryant Funeral Home on Providence Road.
Funeral services will be held 11 am Friday, July 20th, at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church (2929 Selwyn Avenue) with a reception to follow. Interment will be held at a later date at the Penn State Centre County Memorial Park, State College, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church or the W. Edward & Kay M. Hastings Graduate Scholarship Fund at Smeal College of Business, The Pennsylvania State University, 210 Business Building, University Park, PA 16802-3603.
