Local Chef W. Garnett Black of Toledo passed suddenly on September 22, 2018. Garnett was born on September 29, 1959 in Detroit, Michigan to Robert and Rosalie Black. As a child, his rambunctious personality often got him in trouble.

He grew up attending 70s rock concerts at Cobo Hall in Detroit and deer hunting at Turtle Lake in Northern Michigan with his dad and brother. He loved to entertain and be outdoors. At the age of 14 he discovered his passion for cooking and eventually pursued a bachelor’s degree and two culinary degrees, graduating in the top of his class at the Culinary Institute of America in New York.

He started his career at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, and ended it as the Executive Chef at the Shilo Inns Newport. In his 26 years on the Oregon Coast, he worked at nearly every restaurant and won top prizes in countless culinary competitions. He had a reputation as a loud and quick-tempered chef, but his family and friends knew he was much more than that: the only thing stronger than his passion for the culinary arts was his passion for his family and love for his girls.

Garnett was a confidant and cheerleader to many; all he wanted was for the people he loved to be happy and successful. He was a devoted brother, partner, dad, papa, chef, and friend. Garnett is survived by his younger brother Robin; his love of 17 years Shanda, their daughters Yvonne and Rachell, grand-daughter Kendall and boxer pup Savory.

We will remember the way he laughed and how he yelled at the TV when the Detroit Lions were on; the taste of his food and his enthusiasm for cooking. We know he is at peace with his parents and beloved dog Cheffy. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Shilo Inns Newport on Saturday, September 29 from 11am to 3pm.
