Walter Max Gay, 83, of Doerun, died Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral service will be held 2:00PM, Friday, July 6, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Doerun with Dr. David Benton officiating. Born March 15, 1935, in Colquitt County, Ga, he was the son of the late Walter Earlie Gay and Ocie Delle Tate Gay.

Mr. Gay honorably served his country for 4 years in the United States Air Force from 1953-1957 and was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force Europe. He retired from Merck & Company after 33 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Doerun and has served as a deacon.

Mr. Gay was also the choir director for over 40 years. He was a member of F&AM Lodge 151 for 50 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Martha Taylor and Myra Kimbrell.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Imogean Williams Gay; children Gina West and husband Lyle of Moultrie and Walter Ben Gay of Doerun; granddaughters, Ashley Underwood and husband Andrew of Moultrie, Amber Miller of Doerun, Brittany Casteloes and husband Keith of Moultrie, Jennifer Sparks and husband Stephen of Hahira, and Mary Kathryn Barrera and husband Reno of Kennesaw; great-grandchildren, Jade Casteloes, Deacon Underwood, Brodi Casteloes, Sadie Underwood, Max Walley, Dawson Sparks, Lexi Grace Miller and Madelyn Miller; sisters Mervin Brown and husband Carol, and Marie Saunders and husband Ray of Doerun; brother Merle Gay and wife Dianne of Watkinsville; brothers-in-law Mack Taylor and Jerry Kimbrell; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday, July 6, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Doerun. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Doerun’s Senior Adults fund.
