Walter Thomas “Tom” Balser April 23, 1925 – March 09, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Walter Thomas “Tom“ Balser Jr., age 93, of Tipton, Indiana passed away on March 9, 2019 at Millers Merry Manor in Tipton. Tom was born on April 23, 1925 in Elwood, Indiana to Walter T. Balser and Edith (Newton) Breeze. He graduated from Boston City Schools in 1944 prior to his entry into military service.

On June 29, 1946, Tom married Mary Lou McIntire and they shared in 71 years of marriage together prior to Mary Lou‘s passing on March 10, 2018. Tom was a member of West Street Christian Church, Elks, Tipton’s American Legion Post 46 and the Austin Lodge 128. In his spare time Tom enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, horses, square dancing, go carting and trap shooting.

Tom was a member of the United States Coast Guard serving during WWII. He was a sonar specialist and was credited with the sinking of two German submarines in the North Atlantic. He was a dry cleaner in both Tipton & Kokomo for 50 plus years.

Tom was elected Mayor of the City of Tipton in 1984 and proudly served two terms until 1992. Survivors include a daughter, Martina (Fred) Harvey, two sons; Rick (Sharon) Balser and David (Nina) Balser along with his grandchildren; Matt (Aimee) Harvey, Trisha Harvey, Shara (fiancé Jason) Balser Tragesser, Wes (Jessica) Balser, Cory Balser, Erika (Bob) Gilman, Brooke (fiancé Matt) Balser. Also surviving are Tom’s great grand children; Caleb, Shelby, Colby, Ethan, Rilynn, Cooper, Reid, Carter, Lauren, and Scott.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Mary Lou. The family will receive friends on Saturday morning March 16, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the West Street Christian Church located at 132 North West in Tipton. A service honoring Tom will begin at 12:00 PM following the visitation.

The Reverend Linda McKiernan-Allen will be officiating. In lieu of sending flowers, the family request that monetary donations be made to the West Street Christian Church with envelopes available at the church.
