Obituary for Walter Weber Weigel Print Dr. Walter Weber Weigel, the “Elkton Flash”, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the age of 93. Walter was born on a potato farm in Elkton, FL on September 5, 1925. When all the chores were done, he spent his spare time hunting, fishing and frogging with his friends.

He spent two years in the Navy during WWII. After the war ended, he went to the University of Florida and then on to Emory University where he got a degree in internal medicine with a specialty in cardiology. While in medical school he was set up on a blind date with Carolyn Elkins.

They began a love affair that lasted 65 years and were blessed with 5 daughters. Walter and Carolyn moved to Palatka, FL in 1959 where he set up his medical practice. Over the years he served on the board at Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, was a founding member of Christ Independent Methodist Church, and was involved in many philanthropic endeavors in the community.

After retiring in 1986 Walter enjoyed traveling, fine dining and a good margarita. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and friend to many. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Weigel, 5 daughters, Sharon Bloom (Malcolm), Kathy Jones (Wesley), Fran Parker (David), Jan Stafford (Trey) and Susan Zellers (Craig), 12 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren with another on the way.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Christ Independent Methodist Church with Pastor Michael Hudson and David Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Palatka Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Christ Independent Methodist Church, 4078 Silver Lake Dr., Palatka, FL 32177 or Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, 380 Boys Ranch Rd. , Palatka, FL 32177.
