Obituary for Mrs. WANDA JOY COFER COFFEY NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — Our precious mother, Wanda Joy Cofer Coffey, left this world to be in Gloryland with her Lord and Savior. She died in Bedford Monday afternoon, September 3, 2018 surrounded in love by her children and grandchildren. Wanda was 82 years old.
Service: 10 a.m. Saturday at Legacy Church of Christ, 8001 Mid Cities Blvd. , with J. Bailey, minister, officiating. She will be laid to rest at 1 p.m. Saturday in Jackson Cemetery in Krum, with Alvin Neal, minister, officiating.
Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road, Hurst. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to the American Diabetes Association, in her memory, is suggested. Wanda was born to Jack Hayes and Ethel Mae Cofer in their family home in Krum on June 17, 1936.
She was the oldest, and a bit of a mother hen to her siblings, Jack, Bess, Chris and Carol. She attended Krum schools graduating in June of 1954 with her senior class of 12 who remained close friends and held reunions over the years. One day, when she was 16, Donald Lee Coffey drove by her house and spotted her in the front yard; it was love at first sight and he vowed he would marry her one day.
That vow became official when they married on November 25, 1954. If ever anyone was born to be a dedicated mother and wife, it was Wanda. She loved to garden, cook and sew and couldn’t wait to be a mama.
The Coffey children, Kathy, Beverly, Julie, Linda, and Chuck feel so blessed that God chose her to be their mom. She sacrificed often to provide the best she could for her children and always put their needs above her own. She was loving and nurturing but could also pull out her fly swatter in the blink of an eye when needed.
She taught us to love each other and the Lord and was a pure example of unconditional love and putting family first. Wanda was extremely proud of all her kid’s accomplishments but especially seeing them all graduate college and get married. Her second greatest joy was becoming a grandmother.
She made each of her 13 grandchildren feel special and they have many fond memories of special times with her at the farm. And that joy multiplied as 16 great-grandchildren followed. Nothing made her face light up more than a visit from any one of them.
As much as she loved us all, she also loved games including Monopoly, Canasta, 42, Chickenfoot, etc. , and she played to WIN! She also enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, needlepoint, and painting.
She has a special place in the hearts of many from all the places she lived and the churches she belonged to. She always had a quick smile and people always commented how sweet she was- there was not an ounce of meanness in her. Granny and PawPaw sure knew what they were doing when they gave her the name “Joy” as she surely spread it wherever she went.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Coffey; parents, Jack and Ethel Cofer; parents-in-law, Ross and Clauda Coffey; brothers-in-law Charles and Sid Coffey; sister Carol Chapman, and grandson Stetsen Rector. Survivors: Wanda is survived by her children, Kathy Mayhew and her husband Kevin, Beverly Rector and her husband, John, Julie Trujillo and her husband, Rick, Linda Law, and Chuck Coffey and his wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Joel Mayhew, Dustin Mayhew and his wife, Lauren, Anna-Kate Bogaards and her husband, Peter, Haley Blackmore and her husband, Jonathan, Lizzie Rector, Brian Tucker and his wife, Casey, Megan Tucker, Matt Law, Emily Law, Cameron Coffey, Cooper Coffey and Carter Coffey; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Austin, Jack, Hudson, Thomas, Ava Jean, Emmalijn, Jacob, Ben, Emily, Jameson, Georgia Kate, Rylan, Guy, Poppy, Aoife Grace, Connal, and Kynlee; siblings, Jack Cofer and his wife, Peggy, Bess Enis and her husband, Bennie, Chris Cofer and his wife, Jane, and Tommy Chapman; many nieces, nephews and cousins and their families; and countless friends. 28Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all”.
