William J. “Bill” Ryan, 84, of Murphysboro, passed away at 10:57 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, in Carbondale. Bill was born May 9, 1934, in Springfield, IL, a son to the late William H. and Clara A. (Schmidt) Ryan. He was united in marriage to Dorris Arnette Aydt on November 29, 1957, in Mt.

Vernon, IL. Bill and Arnette celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2017. Bill was a Catholic and was employed as a locksmith and carpenter at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of American Legion Paul Stout Post 127 in Murphysboro and was a member of the American Legion Post 127 Military Rites Detail. He was also a member of Murphysboro Elks Lodge #572 and was formerly an Alderman for the City of Murphysboro. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro; Father Gary Gummersheimer of St. Andrew Catholic Church will officiate.

Burial with military rites by American Legion Post 127 will follow at Murdale Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Crawshaw Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 127 Military Rites Detail and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Arnette Ryan of Murphysboro; son, Mike Ryan and (Daisy Grammer) of Murphysboro; daughter, Lori Harper and (Steven Craig) of Flower Mound, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and Ed Thompson of Carterville, IL; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Debbie Ryan of Ava, IL; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Glenn Vancil of Springfield, IL, and Donna and Larry Neumann of Chatham, IL; six grandchildren, Chrissy Chancey, William Ryan Harper, B.J. Thompson, Kacie Brown, Alden Harper, and Cayley Marie Ryan; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five sisters, one brother and one great-grandson.
