William’s Obituary Colonial Funeral Home – 2170 Hwy. 88 Brick, NJ 08724 William Joseph Mendez, age 72, of East Orange, sadly passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at home. Born and raised in New York City he lived in Jersey City, NJ before moving to East Orange in 2007.

William was a social worker for SAGE in New York City, NY, where he has worked for the past 7 years. He received his master’s degree in social work from Pace University. William proudly served our country in the United States Army as a Medic Specialist during the Vietnam War.

He was an avid theater goer and enjoyed music and reading. William received the LUNY award for his outstanding service in the Latino LGBT community where he was an active member. He was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Manhattan, NY.

William was predeceased by his parents Santiago F. and Carmen (Cruz) Mendez. He is survived by his son Matthew Jason Mendez of Cary, North Carolina, his 2 granddaughters, Alexa of Philadelphia, PA & Lauren of Cincinnati, Ohio, his sister Ruth Anne (Mendez) Bearce and her husband Terry of Brick, his niece Nicole & nephew James Bearce. The family will receive relatives and friends for a viewing on Saturday, March 30, 2019, from 3PM to 7PM at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Highway 88, Brick.

A prayer service will begin at 6:30PM Saturday evening. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in William’s memory to either LUNY or SAGE, 305 7th Ave. , 15th Floor, NYC, NY 10001.
