OBITUARY William Morris Brown Jr., M.D. December 13, 1926 – November 10, 2018 William Morris Brown, Jr., M.D., 91, of Macon, GA passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2018. Morris was the loving husband of Carmen Brown for 65 years. He was born in Macon, GA on December 13, 1926, and was the son of William Morris Brown and Sarah Virginia Turner Brown.
He attended Lanier High School, Mercer University, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed his surgical residency at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific and Japan.
Dr. Brown began his surgical practice in 1957 in Macon and was a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Southeastern Surgical Congress, the Georgia Surgical Society, and the Bibb County Medical Society. He was named Professor of Surgery at Mercer University School of Medicine and taught there from 1984 to 1992. Dr. Brown was on the surgical staff at the Coliseum Medical Center, the Medical Center of Central Georgia, the Middle Georgia Hospital and Northside Hospital.
He also served as Trustee of the Coliseum Medical Center and Chairman of General Surgery at the Medical Center. He was a surgical consultant at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dublin. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry as Junior and Senior Warden.
He was a Lay Reader for many years at Christ Church and also conducted services at other churches in the Diocese. He served on the Board of the Appleton Church Home. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Palaver Club IV, and a member of The Middle Georgia Historical Society and the Museum of Arts and Sciences.
He is survived by his wife, Carmen Shaver Brown. He is survived by his daughter Catherine Brown Rose and her husband Richard Rose of Fairfax, VA and his son, William Morris Brown III, M.D. and his wife Jan Brown of Atlanta, GA; his grandsons, Richard Rose, Jr. and his wife Katherine Rose of Houston, TX, Turner Rose of Mount Pleasant, SC, Davis Rose of San Francisco, CA, Christopher Brown of Atlanta, GA, and Cary Brown and his wife Anna Brown of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and his great grandson, Luke Rose. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Christ Church, 582 Walnut Street, Macon, GA 31201 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
A visitation will be held in The Grande Ballroom at Carlyle Place on Friday, November 16, 2018 from 5:00-6:30 pm. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 17 at 11:00 am at Christ Church. The Reverend Cynthia Knapp will officiate.
