Al Maxfield, 70, of Newton died on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, October 5, at the Grace Church in Newton. The family will greet friends after the service.

Memorials to Al’s family may be left at the church or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Al, the son of James “Tiny” and Bessie (Matney) Maxfield, was born on October 7, 1947 in Marshalltown. He grew up in Albion and served his country in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam.

Most of his adult life he lived in Iowa and Missouri. On November 19, 1994, Al was united in marriage with Jen Chesick York. In recent years they moved to Newton.

He was a member of the Grace Church in Newton and a founding member of the Tri-County Bass Club in Marshalltown. Al loved God and shared Jesus with everyone he met. He loved people and especially loved making people smile and laugh.

Besides his wife and grandkids, fishing and card games were among his favorite things. He truly enjoyed life and counted every day given to him as a blessing. Those left to honor Al’s memory are his wife, Jen Maxfield of Newton; children, Rodney (Tom) Maxfield of Denver, Colorado, Kelly (Jill) Maxfield of Lincoln, Nebraska, Bruce (Jenell) York of Des Moines, Renae Lindemann of Nevada, and Benjamin York of State Center; 15 grandchildren, Zachary (Amber), Kelsey, Jacob, Jordan, Cade, Joshua, Chase, Jaedon, Elizabeth, Samson, Katrina, Marissa, Daniel, Lance, and Bennett; his one great-grandson, Tyler; sister, Brenda (Bud) Wardman of Columbus, Nebraska; and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim and Steve Maxfield; and a niece, Nan Maxfield.
