Alberta Jean Daly Barone , January 13, 1926 — June 13, 2018

Alberta Jean Barone, 92, of South Bend passed away Wednesday June 13 at Healthwin Specialized Care. She was born January 13, 1926 to the late Vernon and Ethel Reed Daly. She lived her entire life in the area.

She preferred to be called Jean. On December 26, 1952 she married the love of her life, Louis Barone. He preceded her in death on September 19, 1997.

Prior to marrying and starting a family Jean worked at Wygant Floral and Mutual Life of New York. Later, she did volunteer work at Memorial and St Joseph hospitals. She was involved in many activities at both.

Jean loved to walk, especially down East Jefferson Blvd and the surrounding neighborhoods. She could be seen several times a day, walking up to 10 miles per day. She would walk in rain, snow and in beautiful weather.

She would always be wearing her headphones, listening to Bruce Springsteen or Neil Diamond. She said their music gave her energy. She walked well into her 80’s when a broken leg sidelined her.

Jean is survived by her 3 children Kathy Barone, David Barone and Nancy (Ernest) Galos, all of South Bend. Also surviving are sister in laws Florence Daly of Mishawaka and Thelma Daly of Florida, as well as many nieces, nephews and her cats. Besides her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by sisters Patsy Eakins and Carole Daly as well as brothers Robert Daly and Jack (Marge) Daly.

Jean’s older brother, Vernon Daly, Sr., who she adored, passed away on the same day as Jean. The family would like to thank the staff at Healthwin for the care and laughter they provided Alberta the last 2 1/2 years. Visitation will take place on Monday, June 18, 2018 from 1-3 in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue.

Services will be conducted at 3:00pm. Burial will take place at 11:00am Tuesday in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Memorial contributions can be made to Heartland Small Animal Rescue.
