SMITH, Alvin H. – of St. Charles, age 92, died Sunday, September 23, 2018, at Hoyt Nursing Home in Saginaw. Alvin was born September 23,1926, in Freemont, MI to the late Henry and Laura (Ballien) Smith. He was a resident of St. Charles most of his life.

Alvin served in the US Army from January 1945 to November 1946. He was a member of American Legion Post 468 of St. Charles. He worked and retired from the State of Michigan Highway Department as a Mechanic.

Mr. Smith was a member of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Charles. He enjoyed camping, gardening, fishing and fixing cars. Surviving are: children: Jennifer Taylor of Birch Run, Vicki Mills of Saginaw, Tim (Deb) Smith of Denver, CO; grandson, Michael Mills of Saginaw; granddaughter, Brandi Smith of Denver, CO; sisters: Mary Ann (Bernie) Schoch of Chesaning and Betty Wade of Hemlock; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Arlene on February 9, 2016; infant sister, Della Smith; son-in-law, Gene Taylor; and brother-in-law, Carl Wade. Pastor Jason Baldwin will officiate at the memorial service on Friday, September 28, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1123 W. Walnut Street in St. Charles. Family will greet visitors at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Military Funeral Honors will be rendered at the church after the memorial service by the American Legion Post 468 of St. Charles. Contributions in Alvin’s memory may be made to Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church. You may light a memorial candle or share a memory at misiukfuneralhome.com.
