OBITUARY Anna Mary Barber Sgrecci September 18, 1920 – October 29, 2018 Anna Sgrecci passed away on October 29, 2018 at the age of ninety-eight. Anna was born on September 18, 1920 to Joseph and Mary Barber who came to this country as first generation Italian immigrants; Giuseppi Barbenti and Maria Baldoni. She is survived by her son, Henry, daughter-in-law, Susan Hertzler, grandchildren Molly and Michael Sgrecci, son-in-law, John Burton, and numerous nieces, nephews, spouses and their children and grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husband, Dominick, and daughter, Patricia Ann Sgrecci; brother and sister-in-law Paul and Marie Barber; sister and brother-in-law, Viola and Edward Woityra; brothers James and Jimmy Barber; nephews, Joseph Barber and Paul Barber Jr., brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Eldred Sgrecci, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Rose and Winston Beckwith, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Armida and Elmo Lamoreaux. Anna grew up on the picturesque Barber family farm on the Skyline Drive in Montour Falls, overlooking Seneca Lake. She graduated from Watkins Glen High School in 1938 and became employed at the Bendix Eclipse factory in Elmira Heights where she assembled bomb fuses in support of the war effort.
She later worked at the M.N. Weed Clothing Store in Montour Falls where she eventually met her future husband, Dominick Sgrecci. Anna and Dominick were married by Father Benedict Ehmann on June 16, 1951 at St. Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church in Watkins Glen. After a honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls they made their home on the current Sgrecci farm on Route 414, Watkins Glen.
Anna will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, homemaker, 4-H leader, keeper of prodigious flower gardens, devout member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and a cherished relative and friend to many. Following her husband’s passing in 2001 Anna remained in her home, continuing to enjoy loving relationships with her siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, neighbors and an extended web of wonderful, caring friends. In more recent years as her health began to diminish her children, Patricia and Henry, and a dedicated group of caregivers assisted her in her home.
Following a fall in September 2017 Anna entered the Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility for rehabilitation and eventual residency. Visiting hours at the Haughey-Wood Funeral Home, 119 Fifth Street in Watkins Glen will take place on Friday evening, Nov. 2, from 7-9 PM.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, Nov. 3, at St. Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church, 905 N. Decatur St. in Watkins Glen. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
