Anna Sue “Susie” King, passed from this life on Thursday, November 22, 2018 from metastatic breast cancer. Sue was born March 28, 1933 to the late Herman and Mary McNeil in Watauga County, North Carolina. Her family, which included her late brother Herman Wallace McNeil Jr., settled in idyllic Tioga county, Pennsylvania, nestled within the Allegheny mountains.
She graduated from Charleston High School in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania then attended nurses training in Buffalo, New York where she married Alton King and started a family of her own in the rural Pennsylvania countryside she so loved, eventually settling down in Bellevue, Ohio to finish raising her children. Sue made many friends throughout her life in Bellevue while working as assistant manager at Gordon Lumber Company for many years. Everyone seemed to know her.
In the days of New Year’s Eve celebrations at the old McClain’s restaurant, Carl’s Beer Dock and Amsden House breakfasts people always walked up to say hello. It was that way all her life. People just loved Sue.
She was strong and independent, yet soft spoken and kind. Her generosity of heart was an inspiration to us all. No stray animal was ever left unfed at her doorstep.
Cats would come in the middle of winter, somehow knowing there was a friend to be found with food in hand and shelter from the cold. When a tiny owl was found helpless in her yard, she made sure it got the sanctuary it needed. She cared for all things, great and small.
Sue loved her beautiful little house and her carefully tended flower gardens in the woods. She carved out a small piece of paradise amid the mature oak and cherry trees that is reminiscent of the place she called home for so many years in Pennsylvania. It was there amongst the rolling hills, gas lit streets and the halls of Charleston High that ever enduring friendships blossomed.
She looked forward to the phone calls with friends and the annual gathering of classmates she so loved in Wellsboro where conversations of younger, spirited days flowed over homecooked meals with such detail you were taken back in time-her time. A time she loved in the hills and fields and dirt roads in a sleepy little town where good friends found exciting adventures and created wonderful memories of a life well lived. Unless you really knew Sue, you might not know how incredibly talented she was.
She enjoyed drawing, sewing, quilting, wood carving and of course gardening. She sewed clothes for her children, baked magnificent bread and always cooked our meals from scratch. She was a gentle, nurturing soul.
Most of all, she loved us and each and every one of us will continue to love and cherish her with all of our hearts, making this such a sorrowful time of parting for all who loved our dear sweet mom. Ann Sue King was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Mary McNeil; brother, Herman “Wally” McNeil and son-in-law, John Magyar. She is survived by her children Scott (Debbie) King, Diane Magyar, Steven (Julie) King, William (Patricia) King, Karl (Lee) Bishop, Kathleen (Paul) Hite, Christina (Greg) Gould, eleven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and former husband, Alton King.
Friends will be received on Friday, December 7, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. at Foos & Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place Bellevue where a funeral service will begin on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home followed by a private burial.
