On February 3rd, 2019, Anne Marie Hunter found peace after an 8-year-battle against Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Anne Marie was born on February 26, 1958 in Northridge, California where she grew up with her parents and 4 siblings. In 1976, she graduated from Louisville High School before attending UCSB, where she earned a degree in Dance Performance.

After college, she choreographed for various rock groups including The Bangles, Sam Kinison, and Lita Ford. She was nominated for an MTV Music Award for her work on The Bangles’ music video, “Walk Like an Egyptian” and even travelled internationally as a fitness instructor. Additionally, she was the lead singer in two rock bands, The Prey and Restless.

While performing at The Palomino Club in Los Angeles one evening, Anne Marie met the love of her life, Kurt Hunter. After moving to Monterey with Kurt in 1991, Anne Marie choreographed and directed shows at various local theaters and became a beloved artist and mentor in the community. She developed much of the material for the current SVSWA “Recycle-Rama”; a show presented in local schools that educates students on recycling.

She taught at Stevenson School for 11 years, and during her tenure, became the Fine Arts Chair. Through her teaching, she consistently encouraged her students by using her catchphrase, “Strong, like bull” to remind them that they can do anything. After her diagnosis in 2012, Anne Marie actively spread awareness about Early-Onset Alzheimer’s disease and would frequently say, “my disease does not define me”.

She actively involved herself in the Alzheimer’s Association, spoke at numerous fundraising events and participated in clinical trials for Alzheimer’s Research. Anne Marie resided at the Cottages of Carmel for the final years of her life, where she was lovingly cared for. She is preceded in death by her husband Kurt and survived by her two daughters, Alison and Emily, who continue her activism in hopes of a cure.

A celebration of Anne Marie’s life will be held on Saturday, February 23rd, at 11 AM at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Corral de Tierra Rd. , Salinas, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Monterey Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, in memory of Anne Marie Hunter.
