Obituary for Mr. August Richard Ghezzi Mr. August Richard “Ghez” Ghezzi, age 90, left this earth December 31, 2018 after a long battle with dementia. August was born June 15, 1928 to Pete and Mabel (Hansen) Ghezzi in Muskegon. He was an insurance salesman for 31 years before his retirement.

August was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church; a past member of the YMCA and the Muskegon Elks. As a young man he was named All State for Muskegon Heights football. He was then recruited from area colleges such as the University of Michigan and Central Michigan University.

He ended up playing for Central, because they offered him the best scholarship. He was later inducted into the Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to football, Dick also bowled, played tennis, racquetball, golf, basketball and softball.

In 1974, Dick earned the title of “The Silver Fox” when he beat everyone younger than him in a tennis tournament. He loved his wife and family, loved taking trips with family and friends and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. On August 28, 1948, he married the love of his life, Maxine Rosalee Saylor.

After less than a one-year courtship, they remained married until she preceded him in death on March 14, 2014. Richard and Maxine had four children, three of which survive him: Patti (Maggie) Ghezzi of Ann Arbor, Dick (Sue Dratz) Ghezzi of Muskegon and Mary (Hal) Ockerse of Boise, ID; his grandchildren, Barry (Amanda) Ghezzi, Travis (Kellie) Ghezzi, Bianca Ghezzi, Josh, Jeff and Kayla Ockerse; 8 great-grandchildren, Bella, Nolan, Sophea, Valerie, Connor, Sophia, Koby , and Summer Gossett; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, August was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael; sister, Margie (Glen) Baker and brother, Don (Pat) Ghezzi.

A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, January 5, 2019 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100, with Paul Kurdziel officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Friday. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
