Barbara Broadbent Corey, age 91, of Weymouth, died peacefully on Tuesday May 1, 2018 at the Queen Anne Nursing Home after a brief illness. Born in Fall River, Barbara moved to Quincy in 1929. She graduated from Quincy High School in 1944 where she was remembered for her lovely soprano voice in musical productions.

She was a 1948 graduate of New England Deaconess School of Nursing, which filled her with great pride and defined the future course of her life. After graduation, she taught nursing at both the Deaconess and Simmons College. In 1951 Barbara married the love of her life, Edward A. Corey.

They enjoyed 60 wonderful years together before his death in 2011. Barbara sang in the Christ Church Quincy choir starting as a young girl. For more than 50 years her voice brought joy to many at weddings, funerals, church musicals, and special holiday services.

While raising her two children, she was a boy scout den mother, was active in the Weymouth PTA and Girl Scouts and taught Sunday School. She is a past president of the Christ Church Mother’s Club. In later years, she was a lay reader and member of Christ Church Women’s Guild, and was a lifelong member of the Braintree Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

She returned to nursing in the late 60’s, and worked in the cardiac unit and then as head nurse in the surgical recovery unit at South Shore Hospital. At the end of her career, she was a nurse at South Shore Medical Center in Norwell. A tragic accident robbed her of a leg in 1974, but she did not let that event limit her goals and dreams.

She was passionate about helping others, and used her strength to give inspiration and hope to other patients who lost limbs. She will be remembered as a strong woman of great faith, determination and courage, who was of service to others, even in her later years. Barbara and her husband enjoyed many travel adventures in the US and abroad, navigating cobblestones, airports and beaches with a wheelchair and a cane.

They lived together in Weymouth for 60 years. She treasured her family, and especially the time she spent with her grandchildren. For the past 14 years she has resided at the Allerton House in Weymouth.

She is survived by her daughter, Meredith Conrad of Hanover, as well as her grandchildren, Justin Corey and his wife Kristen and Steven Corey of Kansas City; Matthew Conrad of Glen, NH; and Olivia Conrad of Hanover. In addition to her husband, Barbara was predeceased by her son Bruce and his wife Lyn, her sister Shirley Broadbent Lueder, and her parents Harry and Isabel Broadbent. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church, Episcopal Quincy Center on Thursday, May 17 at 11 am.

The Reverend Clifford Brown will officiate. Burial will be private. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, May 16 from 4-7 pm at the Mortimer N. Peck – Russell Peck Funeral Home, 516 Washington Street, Braintree.
