Obituary for Barbara Jean Sullivan Barbara Jean Sullivan (née Ettinger) passed at home surrounded by her family on July 22, 2018. She was 74. The daughter of the late Arthur F. Ettinger, Sr. and Esther F. Ettinger, she was born in Bronx, NY on May 15, 1944.

Married 51 years, she is survived by her husband, Daniel Sullivan. She is also survived by her five children: Judith Samson of Santa Cruz, CA; June Shaffer of Falls Church, VA; Daniel Sullivan of Little Elm, TX; Roger Sullivan of Mount Pleasant, SC; and Jean Marie Sullivan of Daniel Island, SC. Her other surviving family includes her sister, Judith D’Armiento of Perryville, MD; brother, Arthur Ettinger, Jr. of Monroe, NY; sister, Nancy Margiotta of Thiells, NY; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara Sullivan graduated from Mercy College of Dobbs Ferry, NY in 1967 with a degree in mathematics. Never afraid to embrace new and exciting challenges, she worked as one of the first computer programmers for IBM. She went on to serve in the Peace Corps in Malaysia, was a small business owner with her husband, worked at National Geographic, and ultimately became a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. State Department serving at U.S. embassies in eight countries across the globe.

After retiring, Barbara and Dan resided in Daniel Island, SC. With her husband, Barbara enjoyed volunteering and supporting a number of local charities such as Meals on Wheels, Low Country Pregnancy Center, and Hospice of Charleston. In 2012, she published her memoir, Born on the Kitchen Floor.

A Vigil Service will be held Wednesday evening, July 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Charleston Cremation Center, 2054 Wambaw Creek Rd. , Charleston. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 26 at 2:00 pm at The Church of Holy Cross, 299 Seven Farms Dr., Daniel Island.

A reception will follow. Entombment will be at Columbarium at Mepkin Abbey, 1098 Mepkin Abbey Rd, Moncks Corner. In lieu of flowers, donations to Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church Building Fund (www.
