Barbara “Speed” Jean Johnson June 06, 1935 – November 10, 2018 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Barbara Jean “Speed” Johnson, “Bye-ta-se-no-kwa”, 83, of Tama passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A Traditional Graveside Service will be held Monday, November 12, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Meskwaki Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement with Larry Lasley Sr. as speaker. A Traditional Wake will be held Sunday evening at the Johnson residence, 258 Sac & Fox Road, Rural Tama.

Barbara was born on June 6, 1935, in Winnebago, NE, the daughter of Robert and Pansy (Peniska) Waseskuk. She graduated from Tama High School. On August 18, 1956, she married Leonard Johnson.

Barbara was previously employed as a teacher’s aide at the local elementary schools. She loved baking and trying new recipes, Pow-wows, reading, and spending time with her family. Barbara lived an active Christian life and liked listening to the Seymour’s music.

Survivors include her husband of sixty-two years, Leonard; her children, Esther Stubblefield, Calvin (Galene) Johnson, Mike (Teresa) Stacey, Kelly Johnson, Kent (Deanna) Johnson, Kyle (Tamela) Johnson, Karena (Demetreus) Johnson, Kyla (Alfredo) Martinez, and Kristina Johnson; numerous grandchildren; one brother, Robert Waseskuk II of Cedar Falls; nephews, Wade (Edith) Waseskuk, Blake (Mindy) Waseskuk, Drew (Angela) Waseskuk, Chad (Sara) Waseskuk, Deron (Shirley) Ward, and James Ward; nieces, Joann (Russell) Youngbear, Ferol Ward, Jana (Andre) Roberts, Kimberly Ward, and Laquetta Ward; and adopted daughters, Brenda (Ron) Ackerman, Clydene (Adolph) Bear, and Jaye (Steve) Stevenson. Preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, Kim Lasley; grandsons, Anthony Kapayou and Billy Stubblefield, and brother, Jimmie Ward.
