Obituary for Bernice Mantsch (Johnson) Bernice L. Johnson Mantsch, 85, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Monday October 15, 2018 at St. Mary’s Home of Erie. She was born in Erie on October 12, 1933 a daughter of the late Wilfred and Margaret Sperry Johnson. Bernice graduated from East High School and went on to work at Shade’s Auto before becoming a homemaker.
She was an active member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed volunteer work and knitting. Throughout the years she donated many items to McKinley Elementary and St. Vincent Health Center.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas “T.J.” Johnson. Survivors include her husband, Howard “Butch” Mantsch; one daughter, Janice Inter and her husband, David, of Erie; two sons, James Mantsch and his wife, Cheryl, of Erie, and Jeffrey Mantsch and his wife, Maggie, of Bradford; two sisters, Catherine Lewis of Ashtabula, OH, and Helen Finney and her husband, Lester, of Beaver, PA; three brothers, Ronald Johnson of Florida, Robert Johnson and his wife, Helen, of Florida, and Frederick Johnson of Seattle, WA; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd.
, on Wednesday (today) from 3 to 7 p.m. and are invited to services there on Thursday at 10:00 a.m.. Burial will follow in Erie County Memorial Gardens.
